Things to do in Exeter
Pick Crealy Meadows as your Exeter accommodation of choice and not only do you have Devon’s largest attraction right on your doorstep, but you’re just a few minutes’ drive away from one of the region’s prettiest and historic cities, too. Exeter is our ‘county town’, and has been a thriving settlement since Roman times. In fact, its roots go way back into Neolithic times, but it was our Roman guests who really turned ‘Isca’ into the busy, bustling city it is today. You can still see plenty of signs of the Roman’s influence here, with the 2,000-year-old city walls still on display near Exe Bridges in the centre of the city.
Secret Exeter
While there’s plenty to see above ground, if you’re looking for things to do in Exeter that are a little bit different, why not book yourself on a tour of the city’s underground catacombs? Just like those you’ll find in Paris, these spooky subterranean corridors chart the history of the city.
Stay at Crealy during October half term and Halloween and you can find out more about Exeter’s supernatural past, with evening ghost walks through its medieval streets and alleys (but be warned, it’s not for the faint hearted!).
Shop ‘til you drop
Short breaks in Devon are bound to include a bit of shopping, and you can’t get much better than the wonderful boutique shops of Exeter. Cut past the library and you’ll discover the narrow alleyways and secrets of Gandy Street, where talented artisans create bespoke jewellery. The Guildhall, Harlequin and Princesshay shopping centres give you plenty of choice from well-known brands to independent traders, while Exeter’s coffee shops provide a welcome break and some of the best Danish pastries you’ll ever taste.
The Cathedral Green
With medieval and Tudor buildings clustered around the green and the imposing sandstone cathedral dominating the skyline, Exeter’s Cathedral Green is the heart of the city. During the summer it’s packed with stallholders for the Exeter Food Festival, or if you’re taking a holiday in Devon during the festive season, check out the Christmas Market for some wonderful and unique presents.
