10 Top Tips for Travelling with a Toddler

12th Apr 2018

Those with children aged between 1 – 5 years old will totally understand that it can be a bit of a rollercoaster trying to keep with your tot happy, especially in a new environment that they're not used to.

To ease your worries read our ten terrific tips to make the journey smooth sailing so that you and your family can enjoy your holiday in (a bit more) peace.

  1. Plan Ahead

As you know, with a child under the age of 4 years old, every outing requires a lot of planning and this isn’t any different to travelling on holiday! Leave a little earlier than you need to, giving time to stop on the way, plus make sure that everyone has gone to the toilet and let off some steam beforehand. If they’re tired out enough they may even sleep the whole journey.

  1. Arrange Activities

Kids get bored if they’re not stimulated, so have their favourite toys on hand to distract them from being in a car seat.

  1. Don't Forget Snack Time

Just as we may still get hangry if we don't have any food, toddlers aren't any different! Bring a lunchbox filled with easy to eat snacks like carrot sticks and sandwiches and toddler beakers filled with water.

  1. Stock up on Medicine

Stay a step ahead of sickness striking by bringing a medicine bag full of travel sickness tablets, liquid paracetamol, and plasters for any accidental tumbles on small unsteady feet.

  1. Bring Some Familiarity

Don't forget to bring your child's favourite toy or blanket that they can't be without! In a strange place this will help them to hold on to some normality, and you don't want to have to drive all the way back for it after the cries!

  1. Prepare for the Weather

British weather can be unpredictable, so bring a range of clothing from shorts and t-shirts to wellies and umbrellas.

  1. Take Advantage of Technology

What toddler doesn't love a fun app or game on Mummy or Daddy's tablet? Download some toddler friendly games and cartoons to keep them entertained for a few minutes.

  1. Comfy Clothes

No matter how long the journey is, if they’re not comfortable then they won’t be happy! Put them in stretchy trousers e.g. joggers and a t-shirt so that they still have a bit of room to move once they’re strapped in. Also don’t forget to have spare clothes in the car in case of accidents!

  1. Link in with Nap Times

If your toddler has a regular sleeping pattern, try to schedule your trip during their nap times

  1. Enjoy it

Your toddlers won’t be little for very long, so treasure the family time whilst you can! Bring a camera, or a phone with plenty of storage to capture the memories for years to come.
