Rats
Rats are clean, intelligent and
affectionate animals that bond to their human companions in much the same way
that dogs do. They make playful, sensitive pets that can be taught to come by
name and learn a variety of tricks. While rats are extremely rewarding pets, if
you cannot guarantee to give your rats at least an hour of quality time every
day, then perhaps a lower maintenance pet would be more suitable.
Baby rats: £8.00 each
Chipmunks
Chipmunks are rewarding pets and
are very easy and cheap to keep. They will eat almost anything from peanuts and
sunflower seeds to bananas and bugs that crawl into their cage. These animals
like a variety of food and activities, although they hide far more food
underneath their bedding than they ever eat!
Chipmunks: £25.00 each
Chickens
Keeping chickens is a real
pleasure – sitting and watching them is very enjoyable. Not only providing entertainment, hens give the added
bonus of providing eggs for the family and friends! As with all pets however, you will need to make sure that your birds are
cared for correctly in order to keep them healthy, and maintain good egg
production.
Chickens: £3.50-£15 each
Guinea Pigs
Guinea pigs can be kept outside
or indoors and the decision as to where they will be kept will affect the type
of cage or hutch required. As with any pet, keeping a guinea pig requires a
commitment to care for it during its entire life, which could be 4 – 7 years or
longer. This includes not only routine feeding, care and time spent with the
animal but also the provision of veterinary treatment if the guinea pig becomes
ill.
Guinea Pigs: £15.00 each or £25.00 for two
Rabbits
Rabbits are very affectionate and
their playful and trainable nature means they also enjoy human companionship,
even though most prefer to sit beside their owner rather than being handled.
Rabbits are sociable and should be provided with company, especially if the
owner is away during the day or the rabbit is to be kept outside.
Baby rabbits: £25.00 each, Rabbits (3 months +): £15.00
Goats
In general goats make excellent
pets. They are simple to feed and house, they respond well to human company, are easily handled and get on well with other animals. Groups
of goats tend to have a very strong social hierarchy, so you will probably have
to work around this and may need to feed a group of goats
individually to ensure the dominant animal does not get all the feed.
Orphan goats: £40.00 each, Pygmy goats: £150.00 (female), £125.00 (male)
Sheep
Sheep can be cheeky, affectionate,
playful and ready to form a lasting a bond with their owner. Anyone that owns
sheep will get to know the quirks and character of each individual. Sheep are
often good with children and if used to close human contact
since birth they will enjoy a pat, scratch or
hug. Most breeds of sheep
are hardy and can over winter outdoors without any trouble. Given
enough grazing, they will not need any extra winter feed, making them
relatively low maintenance, though of course sheep do need to be sheared.
Sheep: £50.00
Ponies
Horses and ponies can provide companionship, loyalty and pleasure
for many owners but they also need a lot of time, energy, love and money to
ensure that they are happy and healthy. Horses are naturally grazing animals
that live in a herd, so access to other horses for company and play is
important.
